No Link Between Epilepsy and Cancer

Swedish researchers report that contrary to earlier suspicions, epilepsy is not associated with an increased risk of cancer.

Writing in the “Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry”, Dr. Cecilia Adelow and her colleagues from the Karolinska Institute say they compared people with various types of cancer to other similar, but healthy, people, with more than 137,000 controls randomly selected from the Swedish Population Registry.

They found that a diagnosis of epilepsy two years or more before a cancer diagnosis was not associated with an increased risk of any of the types of cancer studied.
