United States (Know Cancer News) We have already reported that the cancer death rates have been falling considerably, as per the Federal Report released this Wednesday.
However, the news is not good for Kentucky and Indiana. Kentucky has the nation’s highest cancer death rates.
Kentucky has the highest cancer death rates with Indiana the seventh worst in same category. Wide use of tobacco in both the states, have been blamed for the higher cancer death rates, experts says. Smoking has been the main cause for lung cancer which makes Kentucky the nation’s number one, followed closely by Indiana for second.
Apart from smoking, other lifestyles factors also contribute towards cancer and deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, a third of all cancer deaths nationally are due to smoking and another third are linked to inactivity, diet and excess weight.
Excess weight, Obesity has already been linked to cancer. Most of the Kentuckians do not exercise. They eat fatty foods without much fruits and vegetables, thus contributing to higher cancer death rates.
The only possible way to stop or reduce this rate is that people at Kentucky have to change their lifestyle a bit. They need to exercise more often and take proper healthy food.
Sue Thomas-Cox, the program manager for Kentucky’s comprehensive cancer program, said the state is attacking cancer on both fronts, and she is encouraged that the death rate is declining, even if Kentucky’s decline has been slower than the nation’s.
“Kentucky is on its way,†she said. “We’re slower than other states, but we’re on our way.â€
