Previous research has suggested that vitamin D can help in the prevention of cancer. Now there is fresh evidence from an analysis from the University of California. They looked at the risk of breast cancer among two large clinical studies and found those women with the lowest levels of vitamin D in their blood had the highest risk of cancer. They believe that taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 and, when the weather permits, spending ten to 15 minutes a day in the sun would afford women significant protection against breast cancer.

Meanwhile, a second study from the same team shows that vitamin D may also protect against colorectal cancer. The analysis involved nearly 1,500 individuals followed up for 25 years and also showed that those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had the highest cancer risk. The researchers think that the above vitamin D recommendations could reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by two thirds. However, sun exposure should be limited – the skin should not burn and those with darker skin may need up to 25 minute’s exposure to get the vitamin D benefits. The research included data from the Women’s Health Initiative, which did suggest that vitamin D does not protect against colorectal cancer. The researchers believe that higher levels of the vitamin do, in fact, afford some protection.

It is believed that one hour of daily vigorous exercise or two hours of less strenuous activity is now linked to a lower risk of colon cancer, according to the results of a recent study.

Cycling, Jogging, running, pumping iron, swimming, and even housecleaning can do the trick, as demonstrated by research conducted with 413,000 people in 10 European countries.

Of those studied, people with the highest level of exercise were 22 percent less likely to develop cancer and 35 percent less likely to develop tumors on the right side of the colon. Those of normal weight enjoyed a greater benefit, but exercise was also beneficial for the overweight and obese. Exercise did not have a protective effect against rectal cancer.

This research helping to support the fact that about 70 percent of colon cancer cases can be prevented by changes in diet and exercise is significant because of the large sample size and the different levels of activity observed across the borders.

Colon and rectal are among the most common cancers in developed countries. More than 940,000 cases are diagnosed each year. About 492,000 people die from the illness.

In a clinical trial conducted at the University of Nottingham, scientists gave a vaccine to 67 colorectal cancer patients before and after surgery to remove the cancerous tumors. The British researchers say they have developed a vaccine that stimulates the immune system to fight colorectal cancer cells.Vaccine trials are not new in the search for effective cancer treatments but many times they are given as a last resort and are not effective. The vaccine is named 105AD7. The antibody in the vaccine was cloned from a patient who survived seven years despite liver metastasis from colorectal cancer. Lindy Durrant, study senior author and professor of cancer immunotherapy said “This is very unusual, as most patients die within a year of getting liver metastasis. I thought if this antibody had helped this patient, if we could clone it, it might help others”.

The researchers reported in the current issue of Clinical Cancer Research that the vaccine helped stimulate immune cell production in up to seventy percent of the patients studied.

An experimental vaccine may help colorectal cancer patients battle the disease. This vaccine developed in the U.K. stimulated the production of killer T cells in up to 70 of colorectal cancer patients.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham cloned an antibody called 105AD7 from a patient with colorectal cancer who survived seven years with liver metastases.

“This is the first vaccine shown to stimulate TNF-alpha — an immune system protein that is very effective at killing cancer cells,” says senior author Professor Lindy Durrant, from the University of Nottingham in England.

The study involved 67 patients, average age 66, with colorectal cancer of varying severity. They were randomized to receive 100 mcg of 105AD7, 105AD7 with BCG (a bacteria used to stimulate the immune system in cancer patients) during the first immunization followed by 105AD7 alone, or no treatment.

Around 70 percent of patients responded to the vaccine, which increased the production of an immune system protein called TNF-alpha. TNF-alpha stimulated the production of killer T cells, which produced cancer-destroying immune proteins called cytokines. Survival rates were not studied.

“This is very unusual, as most patients die within one year of getting liver metastases,” reported Durrant. “I thought if this antibody had helped this patient if we could clone it — it might help others.”

Patients were immunized before surgery on the day they started the study and again two weeks later if they had not had the surgery yet. The vaccines were also given at three, six, and 12 weeks after surgery, then at three monthly intervals for up to two years. Lab tests show most of the patients had a T-cell response against the vaccine.

The study appears in the November 15 issue of Clinical Cancer Research.

Red wine consumption is associated with a reduced risk of various forms of cancer–leukemia, breast and prostate, in animal studies and in real life. A new study found that drinking more than three glasses of red wine a week reduced the incidence of abnormal growths and cancers of the intestinal tract by two-thirds.Red wine has something that white wine does not have. A compound found under the skin of the grape called resveratrol. Resveratrol content is higher in red wine than white wine because the grape skins are removed early in the fermentation process for white wines. Resveratrol interferes with all three stages of cancer formation–initiation, promotion and progression.

Dr. Joseph C. Anderson, an assistant professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, says “I generally advise against drinking, but if your going to drink, drink red wine”. Anderson’s study included 1,741 people. The incidence of colorectal neoplasia, cancers and polyps that can become cancerous, was 9.9 percent in those that abstained from alcohol, 8.8 percent in those who drank three glasses or more of white wine a week and 3.4 percent in those that drank three glasses of red wine a week, a 68 percent reduction.

Whatever the cause of the protective effect, Anderson said he advises people against taking up the wine habit for health reasons.

An anti-viral molecule, TBK-1, that the body uses to fight viruses, seems to be vital to the survival of cancer cells. Blocking one enzyme, aldose reductase, was found to stop colon cancer cells in cell culture laboratory tests and in mice implanted with human colon cancer cells, according to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center researchers.

“We got the surprise that this mechanism is involved in cancer cell survival, even though it’s normally involved in immune response,” stated Dr. Michael White, associate professor of cell biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

“We found something a little bit different — an Achilles heel of cancer cells that’s apparently broadly conserved among many types of solid tumors. This is making us think that there are many other surprises awaiting discovery regarding biological systems that are inappropriately subverted during development of cancer.”

The discovery is called dramatic and could lead to new treatments for colon cancer. If blocking a single anti-viral molecule does shut down the biochemical signals that promote inflammation and colon cancer cell growth, as the researchers are reporting from the results of this study, it will be a dramatic discovery.

September is the month for Prostate Cancer Awareness. In United States alone, approximately 234,460 men will learn that they have prostate cancer, and nearly 27,350 will die from the disease. However if diagnosed and detected earlier, prostate cancer can be treated in time. The survival rate is far up to 100 percent. As per a study, men are at a much higher risk for prostate cancer and are more likely to suffer as due to lack of screening for this disease. However most of the cases can not be prevented or treated because of the risk factors beyond a man’s control (such as age, race and family history), there are few steps that can certainly reduce the risk for prostate cancer. As per a research, eating a high fiber, low-fat diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables daily can help reduce the risk for both prostate and colorectal cancers. Another way out is to reduce the risk is to get checked for prostate cancer every year, usually after the age of 50. However, African-American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer need to begin annual testing by age 45.

Usually, Prostate cancer has no symptoms in it’s early stages but as it becomes complex, the prostate cancer affected patients can face the symptoms like difficulty in urination.

Screening for prostate cancer consists of two steps: a doctor’s exam of the prostate gland and a blood test that measures a protein made by cells in the prostate. The blood test is called a PSA, which stands for “Prostate-Specific Antigen.” High PSA levels in a man’s blood indicate a prostate problem, but not necessarily cancer! Since neither of these screening techniques are 100 percent effective, it is the combination of the two that allows for the early detection of prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer is the second most found cancer in men, next to skin cancer. We hope that with this program in pursuit, many men will realize and be proactive regarding their health issues and be a good decision-maker as far as the necessity of screening for prostate and colorectal cancer is concerned. Stat says that one out of six will get prostate cancer.

We hope that this program will help in eliminating cancer and its sufferings through awareness and education.
